Vladimir Putin is threatening to launch a new intercontinental ballistic missile, which he calls "Oreshnik," against Ukraine, with Kyiv potentially being the target, the Russian media Kommersant reports.

The Pentagon says the Oreshnik is a tweak of Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh missile, an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that has been tested since 2011.

The NATO-Ukraine Council convened at a meeting on Nov. 26 in response to Russia's use of the intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), "Oreshnik", the NATO alliance said in a news release.

In a stark warning to the West, President Putin said the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles.
